Storyteller

October 29, 2005

I can’t think of a show in Branson that would appeal to as many people as Darren Romeo’s show. Not only is it a wonderful concert, it’s a breathtaking illusion show. Never before has there been such a unique blend of magic and music on the same stage, and Darren proves himself to be a consummate performer onstage. I went to the show only expecting to see magic; I did not imagine I would be so impressed with Darren’s singing voice.

The show is well balanced and it flows seamlessly between dramatic pieces, comedy interludes, and emotional numbers. Darren is an excellent storyteller, and it feels as though he truly opens up in the show and lets you into his world of magic and music. My favorite part by far was the trick he performed with the floating paper rose. It had a beautiful song paired with it (Billy Joel?), and the story was one anyone could relate to.

My girlfriend was totally impressed with the magic. She is still talking about the trick he did with this floating table. He brought a woman onstage and with her help, made a small wooden table float all over the stage.

As for the music, there’s a pretty diverse sampling of it. There are several Broadway numbers (Phantom, Barnum, Jesus Christ Superstar), some old Bobby Darin pieces, and a few modern tunes thrown in here and there. He does a great job of spoofing a number of pop artists in a clever impression routine (I love the Elton John impression!). Darren’s show manages to cover a wide range of music, and his voice just won’t quit. He’s got some serious pipes!

All in all, I think this a show that would appeal to a large number of people. If you enjoy live music, there is no doubt that you’ll be impressed with Darren’s vocal stylings. If you are a fan of magic, you will certainly be fooled by the grand illusions. If you’re a fan of both magic and music, well, then you have no excuse not to see this show. Two thumbs up.
