Beach Boys ShowThe Beach Boys Are Not Great Musicians, I Just Don't Know Why I keep Going We saw the Beach Boys on Saturday May 1 at the Welk Theatre and have seen them several times before. I just don't know why I keep going - they keep doing the same show and they are obviously over the hill and have been for at least twenty years. It's kind of like trying to rationalize about why you love your wife - you just do. Or why the swallows keep going back to Capistrano. The Beach Boys are not great musicians, they do not sing well, Mike Love wanders around the stage with no attempt whatsoever to pretend choreography. Their songs are not exactly catchy (ie. "round, round, I get around, round, round I get around" or "help me Rhonda, help, help me Rhonda, help, help me Rhonda.) They have no special effects, no costumes of note, no special set or scenery (unless you count three plastic palm trees), and their ticket prices are ridiculous (I paid about $50 a ticket, including Ticketmaster fees) So why do I go, you ask?…..The answer is one word "nostalgia". The Beach Boys bring back an era that was a happy time in my life. With their music comes memories of a bygone era of simpler times, when everything was either right or wrong and nothing was in between. People were decent, helping their neighbors was the thing to do, and there was little to divide the rich and the not so rich. What a wonderful world that was, and the Beach Boys help me remember what fun it was to be a kid in that time frame. For a couple of hours I can be young again. I will probably go again next year.
