My wife and I have been coming to Branson once a year for about
the last 7 years. I saw this show in the "Little Opry" theatre
inside the IMAX complex for the first time this year. It is the best
show that we have ever seen in Branson. This is not one of those
shows where they just come out and sing a few songs with a tape
playing in the background. Everything they do is absolutely live.
The guitarist is the best I've heard for this style of music. He
makes that guitar talk! The acting is brilliant and the vocals are
amazing. We saw 5 shows while in town. Here is how we rate them: #1=
Smoke on the mountain. #2=Legends in concert. #3=Dixie Stampede.
#4=Shoji Tabuchi. #5=Jim Stafford.

Smoke on the
Mountain is an actual play, not just a string of songs. This
differentiates it from most Branson shows.
It is performed in a very intimate (I'd guess 200 seat) theater in
the IMAX Theater complex. It reminded me of attending community
theater at some of the Detroit area's best community theater groups.
The inexpensive props and set give just enough feeling of a little
country church. The costumes are similar to those seen in community
theater. The level of talent of the cast, however, is tremendous!
The basic concept is in the late 1930's a pastor invites a singing
family to his church to "keep up with the times". The family has
many "unusual personal traits" that come-out as the family sings and
"witnesses" interfering with the pastors attempt to have a service.
The pastor can't quite keep control of his service as the strong
personality quirks of the family generally take over his attempts to
have a service that is relevant to his flock.
If you like murder mystery or bizarre family wedding type shows,
you'll love this show!
I especially liked the performances of the mother and son in the
show. The uncle was a tremendous guitarist. The piano lady was
excellent and animated when appropriate! The non-singing daughter
played a tremendous variety of "hillbilly" instruments very well!
I'd put an older gentleman in as the pastor.
As a regular attendee of community theater, I really enjoyed the
program. I do think, however, that the pricing is too high, based on
theater/props/etc when compared with similarly priced Branson shows
and the cost of other community theater shows.
I'm a 47 year old man, my wife is 51. This was our 1st Branson
visit. We ended up attending 10 shows and this show was near the
middle of the pack in quality for me. My wife liked the elaborate
shows. Her only lower ranked show was the ABSOLUTELY AWFUL Jim
Reeves Tribute at the NOVA theater.
If you like well sung, funny, ANIMATED community theater, you will
be pleased with your decision to attend this show.

Smoke on the Mountain is a little Gem of a Show.
I have seen it several times...I continue to love it. The first time
I took my husband to see Smoke on the Mountain, we walked into the
little theater that looked like an old time church and there was a
sweet little lady that was playing hymns on the piano for the
pre-show. Well, my husband looked at me, horrified. We are Catholic
and here I was leading him into what looked like a Baptist Church
instead of the Branson Show he had bargained for. I just said,
"Trust me. You'll love it." He did! He laughed and laughed. He even
liked the music. This show is hard to explain...every time I try to
explain it, people are still surprised when they go see it. It's so
much better than you can imagine.
So I will just say that if you like to laugh at good, clean humor
and you enjoy seeing plays and musicals, I believe that you will
truly enjoy Smoke on the Mountain. The cast members are very
talented actors as well as singers.
I predict that you will find yourself thinking about this show later
and smiling.
